Navigating on the St. Lawrence River will now be easier thanks to technology.
On Tuesday, the New York Sea Grant announced the public upload of the new real-time Great Lakes Observing System St. Lawrence River Boaters Forecasting tool for recreational boaters.
This new tool extends Great Lakes global observing technology to the St. Lawrence River with some data specific to the river system.
The web-based application provides real time and 12-hour-forecasted water currents and depth data for the St. Lawrence River.
Boaters, and marina operators, can access the site by computer and smart phone. Users can request email and text alerts that are sent when their pre-set datapoint, for example, a change in water depth or speed, is reached.
There are plans to transition the online application into a smart phone app, however at this time creators are concerned that with the Canadian and U.S. cell phone towers so close to one another roaming charges would be incurred by the user.
