SU Hoops: Orange Tops Pace 99-63 In Exhibition Opener

The Orange opened the exhibition portion of its 2012-13 campaign with a 99-63 victory against Pace on Thursday evening in the Carrier Dome.
(SU ATHLETICS) – Six different players reached double-digit figures for Syracuse and the Orange opened the exhibition portion of its 2012-13 campaign with a 99-63 victory against Pace on Thursday evening in the Carrier Dome.

Senior forward James Southerland had a game-high 18 points while sophomore guard Michael Carter-Williams and junior forward C.J. Fair each contributed 16 points. Junior center Baye Moussa Keita added 14 points and junior guard Brandon Triche and freshman center DaJuan Coleman had 11 apiece.

Both Keita and Southerland converted seven-of-eight from the field and overall the Orange was 37-of-64 from the floor (.578). Syracuse held a commanding 55-24 edge on the glass.

The Orange held Pace to just 33 percent field goal shooting (23-of-69).

Pace opened the games scoring with a bucket but Syracuse answered quickly with a 14-0 run, keyed by eight points from Carter-Williams.

SU took a 20-4 lead over the Setters at the 13-minute mark after Keita dunked off of a pass from Triche. The slam came in the midst of a 15-3 Syracuse stretch that had the Orange ahead 35-10 with just over nine minutes left in the first half.

Two Triche free throws closed out the first 20 minutes and the Orange entered the intermission ahead, 55-29.

The Syracuse advantage never dipped below 23 points after the break. Southerland stood out with 11 of his 18 points coming in the second half.

Pace, a Division II foe, was led by Jonathan Merceus, who tallied 15 points and nine rebounds.

Syracuse will be back in action at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4 as the Orange hosts its second exhibition game of the season against Bloomsburg in the Carrier Dome.
