2012 “Give Kids a Smile” award to benefit Baby Teeth Basics project on Fort Drum

4.30.2012 <br> The New York Dental Foundation will award the North Country Children’s Clinic $6,919 to implement a preventive dentistry program at Fort Drum.

The North Country Children’s Clinic is one of three organizations that have been awarded the 2012 “Give Kids a Smile” award.

The New York Dental Foundation will award the North Country Children’s Clinic $6,919 to implement a preventive dentistry program at Fort Drum.

The children’s clinic was granted the award due to their continued efforts in improving oral health care for children across upstate New York.

The Dental Foundation grant will allow North Country Children’s Clinic to add fluoride treatments and free dental screenings to their Baby Teeth Basics project which provides dental education to Ft. Drum parents to help them care for their baby’s teeth.

Judy Overton, Director of Dental Services for the North Country Children’s Clinic told MyABC50.com that throughout the year many military families utilize the dental services provided through the WIC program.

“We have been able to work with expecting mothers to maintain healthy smiles for their babies once they are born,” said Overton.

Overton continued that they see approximately 800 military families a year, which prompted the North Country Children’s Clinics’ interest to be directly on Fort Drum.

“We will be working with them directly on Fort Drum at the family community centers where WIC programs are supported,” said Overton.

Baby Teeth Basics is funded by the Ft. Drum Officer’s Wives Club and the Samaritan Auxiliary.

The dental screenings, fluoride treatments and educational packets will be provided by a licensed dental hygienist, at no cost to families, at WIC clinics held at Mountain Community Homes Community Centers at Adirondack Creek and Rhicard Hills. The project is expected to serve 800 families on-post over the next 12 months.

The project will kick-off at the Children’s Clinic’s WIC Clinic at Rhicard Hills Community Center on May 3rd.
