CDC rolls out new graphic Anti-Smoking commercials

The CDC says the ads are working, which is why they’re rolling out a new round of the commercials.
Syracuse (WSRY-TV) -- Whether you like them or you hate them, many of you have an opinion about the graphic anti-smoking ads from the Centers for Disease Control.

The ads feature real stories of smokers who have had their lives ruined by tobacco use.

More than 440,000 Americans die each year from smoking related diseases.

The goal of the adds, to get the 1 in 5 Americans who still smoke, to quit. The CDC says the ads are working, which is why they’re rolling out a new round of the commercials.

Tom Merrick with Eric Mower and Associates Ad Agency says the commercials grab your attention and that’s the point.

“Is it shocking? Yes. Does it make you gross out on your sofa? Yes. That's what makes it so powerful,” Merrick said. "And that's why Terrie's story has a million and a half views."

Lately, there has been a bigger focus on transparency in advertisements. If you log onto the CDC’s website, you’ll find even longer clips about how tobacco has impacted lives.

The ads will run for the next three months on TV and radio and you’ll also see them on billboards and online
