Fire at old Spaziani Bakery building causes severe damage

The bakery itself closed down in 1994 and had been used as a warehouse. The bakery dates itself back to the early 20th Century.

Watertown (WTNY) -- An investigation is underway into what caused a fire that damaged an important part of Watertown's Italian heritage.

Fire struck the former Spaziani Bakery on Swan St. in the city on Tuesday afternoon. The fire was reported just before 1 pm after smoke was found coming from the structure. The bakery itself closed down in 1994 and had been used as a warehouse. The bakery dates itself back to the early 20th Century.

The building suffered significant damage.
