Fort Drum (WTNY) -- Fort Drum has become one of about a half dozen sites along the Eastern United States to be considered as a possible missile defense site.
It was announced Thursday that the Missile Defense Agency has listed Drum as one of several possible sites. North Country Congressman Bill Owens says while encouraged by the news, he cautions that this is just a feasibility study at this point and nothing is set in stone. Ft. Drum is the only New York site on the list of five. The others include sites in Vermont, Ohio, Maine, and Michigan.
The bases would be used to shoot down missiles sent to attack the U.S..
A similar system is set up along the West Coast.
