ORANGE WINS BATTLE ON THE MIDWAY, 62-49

The #9 Syracuse Orange basketball team opened the 2013 season with a 62-49 victory against #20 San Diego State in the "Battle On The Midway."
(SU ATHLETICS) - The #9 Syracuse Orange basketball team opened the 2013 season with a 62-49 victory against #20 San Diego State in the "Battle On The Midway" in San Diego, Calif aboard the USS Midway aircraft carrier.

Three players scored in double-digits for the Orange, as seven different players found the scoring column in the eighth consecutirve season-opener victory for SU, dating back to the 2004-05 season.

Junior C.J. Fair and sophomore Michael Carter-Williams led the offense with 17 points apiece, while Fair registered a team-high 10 rebounds. Senior Brandon Triche recorded 15 points and three steals. Both Carter-Williams and Triche added four assists apiece.

SU shot 45 percent from the field holding SDSU to 27 percent field goal shooting. The Orange held the Aztecs to just six percent three-point shooting.

Fair opened the scoring for the SU with a pair of free throw shots to even the score at 2-2. The Orange settled into an offensive rhythm, responding with a 17-2 run to extend their lead to 15 points at the eleven minute mark. Fair led the team during the offensive strike with seven points.

SU took a 14 point lead with 6:18 remaining in the half, their largest of the frame. SU played with a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half, as they entered the intermission leading the Aztecs, 33-19. The Orange defense was helped out by sophomore Rakeem Christmas, who had four blocks in the opening frame.

Following the break, SU continued to command a double-digit advantage, as the Orange took their largest lead of the game at 54-37, leading by 17 with less than five minutes remaining in the game.

Triche took over the scoring in the second half, logging 11 points and two rebounds. Junior Baye Moussa Keita led the Orange with five rebounds in the final frame.

Syracuse did not relinquish the lead as time expired, as the Orange earned their first win of the season in a 62-49 victory over San Diego State.

Jamaal Franklin led the Aztec's offense with 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
