"Roommate Law" gets another look

Nathan Lehman (WTNY) - Among the changes agreed to by the planning board yesterday, changing the official definition of family as "any number of individuals living and cooking together at the premise as a single housekeeping unit"
Watertown (WTNY) -- The Watertown City Planning Board has moved ahead with a proposal to change the controversial "roommate law".

Board members on Tuesday agreed to several amendments to the law, which was changed earlier this year by the Watertown City Council. Among the changes agreed to by the planning board yesterday, changing the official definition of family as "any number of individuals living and cooking together at the premise as a single housekeeping unit" a definition that was on the books back in 1922.

The changes also include a more specific definition of what a boarding house was and reiterated that they should not be allowed in Residential A zoned neighborhoods.

The matter now goes back before the Watertown City Council, which is scheduled to meet Monday night.
