SU Football: Orange Capture First Win of the Season

Syracuse football (1-2) captured its first win of 2012, defeating Stony Brook (2-1), 28-17, on Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome.
SYRACUSE, N.Y.- In its third-straight game of producing over 400 yards of offense, Syracuse football (1-2) captured its first win of 2012, defeating Stony Brook (2-1), 28-17, on Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome. The Orange offense racked up 549 yards total yards, led by Ryan Nassib going 22-of-35 passing for 335 yards and three touchdowns.

Wide receiver Marcus Sales finished with 117 receiving yards, recording his fourth straight 100-yard game. Sales' touchdown catch in the fourth quarter extended his streak to four consecutive games with at least one touchdown reception.

Wide receiver Alec Lemon's 23-yard reception in the third quarter was his 136th reception of his career. He now is in third on SU's career completion list.

Dyshawn Davis and Marquis Spruill led the Orange defense with eight tackles apiece.

The Seawolves were the first to get on the board in the game after quarterback Kyle Essington threw a deep 63-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Norrell 3:39 into the game.

Following Stony Brook's scoring play, Nassib tossed the ball to running back Prince-Tyson Gulley. Gulley took off running for a 61-yard touchdown play to even up the score. The scoring drive lasted two plays and 63 yards and took 38 seconds. It was the longest play of SU's season so far and the second of Nassib's career (62 yards to Can Chew vs. Rhode Island, 2011).

The Seawolves added on a 20-yard field goal with 4:18 left in the first quarter to take a 10-7 lead.

An interception by Jeremi Wilkes at the Stony Brook 41-yard line gave the Orange back the ball and momentum two minutes into the second quarter. It was Wilke's third career pick.

Freshman Ashton Broyld gave SU its first lead of the game with 6:01 left in the first half after a 22-yard touchdown play. His first touchdown of his career came after a five play, 78 yard drive that lasted 1:26 and put the Orange up 14-10.

Stony Brook then took back the lead, 17-14, after a 71-yard rushing touchdown by Miguel Maysonet with 4:24 left in the first half.
Nassib and his offense opened up the second half with nine play, 85 yard drive that included a 38-yard completion toMarcus Sales and ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jarred West. West's touchdown came at 11:27 in the third quarter and was his first touchdown this season. The Orange then led 21-7.

The Orange extended its lead to 28-17 after a with 5:53 remaining in the game after Nassib found Sales for a 19-yard touchdown pass.

Cornerback Brandon Reddish also tallied his first career interception with 3:22 to go in the contest.

Next the Orange travel to Minnesota on Saturday, Sept. 22nd, to face the Golden Gophers at 8 p.m. (BTN).
