Crossing guard dies after being struck by car in Clayton

A crossing guard is dead after she was struck by a vehicle in Clayton late last week.

Police say 87-year-old Douglas Patterson hit 79-year-old Barbara Mitchell in a crosswalk by the Guardino Elementary School at about 8:40 Friday morning.

Mitchell was taken to a Syracuse hospital with what were described as "non-life threatening injuries." But Mitchell was later pronounced dead at Upstate Medical.

Patterson is now facing several charges, including failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care.
