Friday is deadline for 'Excelsior Scholarship' program in New York

Today is the deadline to sign up for New York's program designed to eliminate college tuition for qualified students. The "Excelsior Scholarship" is geared toward covering certain expenses at SUNY and CUNY institutions.

In order to participate, students must come from families making less than $125,000 a year, take 30 credits per calendar year and then stay in the state for certain amount of time post graduation.

The state says over 70,000 people have signed up for the scholarship, but it has also drawn heavy criticism from leaders of in-state private schools, which are not included in the program.
