Jefferson County man who killed his girlfriend's baby sentenced to prison

The Jefferson County man accused of causing a severe brain injury to his girlfriend's baby will spend the next 17 years behind bars.

Appearing in Jefferson County Court Thursday, 24-year-old Jeremiah Garnett was sentenced after he previously pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter.

Garnett injured the six-week-old at an apartment in Philadelphia while the mother was at work in February of 2016.

The baby boy later died at a Syracuse hospital.

Garnett was orginially charged with second-degree murder before taking the plea deal.
