Indian Lake, NY -- Police responded to a report of shots fired at St. Mary's Church in the town of Indian Lake, Saturday.

At about 4:45, Troopers and Sheriff's Deputies arrived at the scene and determined that no shots had been fired in the church and that the suspect was unresponsive.

During the church service, it's alleged that 44 year old Jason Berg,  of Indian Lake, entered the church and started creating a disturbance by shouting obscenities and throwing objects at parishioners.

Berg started advancing towards the priest at which point several parishioners intervened and restrained Berg.

Police say Berg was armed with a loaded .45 caliber pistol, a spare magazine, several rounds of ammunition and a pocket knife.  Berg violently resisted while being subdued and disarmed by parishioners and then became unresponsive.

Efforts to revive Berg were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Two of the parishioners attending the service were injured by Berg when he threw items at them during his outburst.  They were both transported to Glens Falls Hospital by ambulance where they were treated for the injuries and released.

Several parishioners reported hearing what sounded like muffled gunshots coming from outside the church prior to the incident.  A search of the scene was conducted but no evidence of gunshots in the vicinity was located.  The incident remains under investigation.
