UPDATE: 6 month old child is dead, Carthage woman charged with Manslaughter

Amber Simpson was arraigned and ordered held in the county jail on $30,000 cash bail
Carthage (WTNY/WSYR) -- The death of an infant in the Village of Carthage has led to an arrest. New York State Police on Wednesday arrested 25 year old Amber Simpson on a charge of second degree manslaughter.

Authorities say Simpson choked the child on Tuesday morning, but then continued to treat the child as if she were alive. Simpson was the child's aunt and her legal guardian.

"After this happened she cared for the baby further, tried to give the baby a bottle and went on about her business," said Capt. Mark Lincoln of the State Police.

The woman's boyfriend did not notice the child's condition until "14 or 15 hours later" when he called 911.

Police responded to the call of an unresponsive child around 9 p.m. on Tuesday night.

The child was pronounced dead around 9:48 p.m. at a local hospital.

The death occurred at a home on North School St. on Tuesday. The investigation following the death was conducted by state police, with the assistance of the Carthage Police Department, the Jefferson County Child Advocacy Center, and the Jefferson County DA along with child protective services.
