A long time veteran of the Watertown Fire Department has announced that he will retire this year.
Firefighter John F. Fitzgerald, a 27 year veteran with the Watertown Department, began his work as a firefighter on August 20, 1984, initially assigned to Engine 1 on “B” platoon.
Mr. Fitzgerald has received many honors for his selfless work throughout his career, including:
- His efforts on December 15, 1989 at the Midtown Towers fire
- Firefighter of the Year Award from the American Legion Post 61- Awarded for his efforts on April 4, 1990 in assisting two trapped firefighters at a structure fire at 328 Franklin Street.
- Firefighter of the Year Award from American Legion Post 61- Awarded for his efforts on October 10, 1998 when a car went into Cold Creek and he entered the water removing the victim from the vehicle prior to the fire department’s arrival.
Mr. Fitzgerald’s last official day is scheduled for Saturday, September 24.
The Watertown Fire Department says Mr. Fitzgerald will be greatly missed by his fellow fire department family members.
Mr. Fitzgerald plans to visit family and friends in his newly acquired motor home.
