Hoffman: I'm just a regular citizen

6/16/09<br />Saranac Lake man launches bid for Congress; says founders never envisioned career politicians...
Doug Hoffman says the framers of the Constitution never envisioned career politicians, and he's not one.

"I am not looking for a government pension. I have already provided for my retirement," Hoffman said in Watertown Tuesday, announcing his bid for Congress.

As a Saranac Lake native who has worked in the North Country his entire life, Hoffman feels he's the most qualified among a field of likely candidates.

He's a graduate of Saranac Lake Central, graduated from North Country Community College, attended college in Canton and got his B.A. at SUNY Plattsburgh.

As a member of the Reserves and National Guard, he trained at Fort Drum and his nephew was stationed there, he said.

Hoffman said he grew up in a single-parent home, working at a gas station during high school to help his mom pay the mortgage.

He's been a Certified Public Accountant for 32 years, practicing across a wide area of the North Country, he said.

Hoffman launched a series of announcements across the 23rd Congressional District on Tuesday including Watertown, Canton, Malone and Plattsburgh.

In Watertown, he tailored his speech to the Fort Drum community, saying Washington needs to look out for the needs of soldiers on the field and after they return.

He said he hopes to line up the support of county GOP chairs and emerge the winner when the chairs get together to vote on a candidate.
