Police say the quick actions of a teacher averted a tragedy Wednesday at Indian River High School.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department was called to the school just before 1 pm Wednesday with a report of a 15 year old student who had brought a rifle to the school. Police believe the student snuck the rifle in earlier in the day and intended to use it. A teacher observed the student removing the rifle from a case and quickly took the gun away. The school was locked down for a period of time until it was determined that there was no further threat to students or staff. Police are releasing few details due to the students age but say "the student had a detailed plan that was put into motion several month's prior" to Wednesday's events.
