SUNY Potsdam moves to SAT/ACT optional

9/22/09<br />SUNY Potsdam to expand admissions criteria beyond SAT/ACT scores...
SAT, ACT scores and high school GPAs will no longer be the only admissions criteria at SUNY Potsdam.

"Test scores are not always effective measurements of a student's potential at SUNY Potsdam," said Tom Nesbitt, director of admissions.

Starting with the 2010-2011 academic year, the college will also look at the academic rigor of a student's high school career, essays, letters of recommendation, resumes and interviews.

Also, most students won't have to supply their SAT or ACT scores as part of their application if they opt not to.

"It is a natural step in recognizing the importance of considering the whole student in making admissions decisions and not relying solely upon arbitrary and often flawed tests," said SUNY Potsdam President Dr. John Schwaller.

More than 750 colleges and universities across the county have implemented similar policies but SUNY Potsdam is among the first comprehensive SUNY colleges to do so, says a release from the college.
