The recipients are instructed to press certain key strokes on their computer. That causes the computer to freeze. The caller then demands money to get the computer up and running again.
(WTNY) -- The St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Department is warning residents of a phone scam.

It stems from unsolicited phone calls from an individual stating they are with Microsoft Global Company informing the recipient that they have a virus on their PC. Police say the calls are not legit. The recipients are instructed to press certain key strokes on their computer. That causes the computer to freeze. The caller then demands money to get the computer up and running again.

Residents are being asked to report any such calls they receive to local law enforcement.
