Orleans (WTNY) -- Authorities have released more details in connection to that early morning fire that took place Tuesday in the Town of Orleans.
New York State Police are being credited with helping rescue an elderly resident that home. Police say while on patrol at around 1 am Tuesday morning, Troopers Nichole Turck and Scott Whitmore noticed smoke coming from a farm on County Rt. 13. The fire had begun in a barn on the property and had spread to the nearby home, belonging to 85 year old Richard Kennell. Kennell was unaware of the fire and was immediately removed from the residence.
His 85 year old wife Phyllis was still in the residence. The partially disabled woman was physically carried out to safety. Both were treated for minor smoke inhalation at a nearby hospital and released to family members. The fire destroyed the home as well as several barns on the property.
The cause is under investigation.
