National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week: Come Rescue Your Pet

From 1984, where the facility had a low 28 percent adoption/redemption rate and now in 2012 having a 92 percent adoption/redemption, the shelter has worked hard to save the lives of many homeless dogs.

Watertown— November 5th-10th is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week. ABC50 spoke with Todd Cummings, DPO Supervisor who has been with the shelter for 29 years.

Todd started working at the shelter in 1984 he told ABC50 that things have changed dramatically since the year he first began. “When I first started this place was definitely a ‘kill facility’ but, since I’ve been here my staff and I have worked really hard to minimize the amount of animals euthanized” Todd said and went on to state that he hopes people can come down Sunday to adopt with the desire to make one of the dogs a part of the family and not merely because they fear an animal might be “put down.”

The facility sees roughly 650 dogs annually and out of that amount in 2011, 23 dogs were euthanized. This year, the shelter saw the same amount of dogs, around 650 and out of the 650 only 14 were euthanized. “This is a historic record for us” said Mr. Cummings “We have a 92 percent adoption and redemption rate, which is pretty high.” Out of the 92 dogs, half are adopted by new owners while the other half, the original owners come and claim their pets.

From 1984, where the facility had a low 28 percent adoption/redemption rate and now in 2012 having a 92 percent adoption/redemption, the shelter has worked hard to save the lives of many homeless dogs. The shelter takes pride in ensuring that their dogs have opportunities to get adopted and placed in good homes.
