Ft. Drum could be used as temporary housing for children crossing the border from Central America

Fort Drum is currently housing National Guard troops, so a decision on the matter may not come until August at the earliest
Some of the children being detained after crossing the southern border illegally may soon find their way to Northern New York.

The federal government is looking at the possibility of making Ft. Drum a refugee center for those children.

The government is trying to figure out what to do with the waves of children who are crossing the border illegally from Central America. Some have called it a humanitarian crisis.
