State Senate passes professional MMA bill; heads to assembly

New York is still the only state to have a ban on professional MMA
Albany (WSYR-TV) - The State Senate approved a bill on Tuesday that would allow professional mixed martial art competitions to take place in New York State.

The bill would give the State Athletic Commission the jurisdiction to regulate professional MMA promotions, participants, bouts and exhibitions.

New York is still the only state to have a ban on professional MMA.

A 2013 study by HR&A Advisors, a real estate, economic development and energy efficiency consulting firm, estimates professional MMA events would bring more than $33 million in annual economic activity to Upstate New York.

The bill will now go to the State Assembly.
