The first tip, according to the
Humane Society of the United States, is to make sure pets are kept indoors.

Other tips offered by the Humane Society include:


  • Take precautions if your dog spends a lot of time outside
  • Help neighborhood outdoor cats
  • Give your pets plenty of water because cold weather depletes their energy Be careful with cats, wildlife, and cars
  • Protect paws from salt
  • Avoid antifreeze poisoning
  • The best tip of all: keep your pets with you
