Angelina Jolie Pitt is trying her hand at directing again.
The actress, who directed last year’s failed Oscar bait Unbroken, has signed on to helm a show for Netflix. She’s adapting the memoir First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers by Loung Ung as a drama series for the streaming service, The Hollywood Reporter said Thursday.
Ung was the young daughter of a government official whose life — along with the lives of most Cambodians — was profoundly affected when Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge took power in 1975. She ended up a child soldier while her siblings were sent to labor camps. Kirkus Reviews described the book as “a harrowing true story of the nightmare that was Cambodia in those terrible times of mass murder and slow death through starvation, overwork, and disease.”
Jolie Pitt co-wrote the screenplay with Ung. The actress, who is a mother of six — including Maddox, 13, who was born in Cambodia — will produce as well as direct.
