ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A man is dead after police say officers walked in on an armed robbery attempt at a Family Dollar.

According to Rochester Police Chief Cynthia Herriott-Sullivan, officers were called to the Family Dollar on West Main Street in the city around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Two officers arriving on the scene “walked into a robbery in progress,” and exchanged fire with the 24-year-old Simran Gordon.

“This did involve an armed robbery in progress,” said Herriott-Sullivan in a press conference Thursday. “We did get an initial notify from an employee that managed to get in the back of the store in a storage area, and they did call 911 and we were able to at least determine that a manager was being held at gunpoint, and there was some sort of robbery in progress.”

There were initially two officers that got on scene, police say. “Once they arrived there were employees in the store, some customers,” said Herriott-Sullivan.

Gordon was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said no officers, customers, or employees were hurt.

“The officers initially approached the suspect, which then turned into a foot chase within the store,” Herriott-Sullivan said Thursday. “Shots were fired and the suspect was dead on the scene. We are working on releasing the video associated with the incident.”

Herriott-Sullivan, who announced her impending retirement earlier that day, said footage from inside the store would provide more clarity in time.

“They’ve got all that video,” she said. “They’ve got body worn video. All that has to be reviewed.”

Herriott-Sullivan said Gordon was also a suspect in 3 other murders from the past 2 years.

The New York State Attorney Generals’ Office has taken on the investigation, as is protocol for any fatal shooting involving a police officer in the state.

The Family Dollar posted a sign saying that they will reopen this Sunday at 8am.
