In observation of Black History Month, Jefferson Community College (JCC) will hold a diversity and civil rights presentation featuring Dr. Maurice A. Stinnett, the first black man to be appointed Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion at BSE Global, and Bettie Mae Fikes, blues performer, on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. in Sturtz Theater. The public is welcome. Admission is free.
As the inaugural Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion for BSE Global, which owns and operates state-of-the-art venues such as the Barclays Center, and premier sports franchises including the NBA Brooklyn Nets, Dr. Stinnett creates innovative programming tailored for inclusion and cultural competence and provides leadership and support across BSE’s brands. Dr. Stinnett is an energetic presenter who is a fierce advocate for equity and inclusion across nonprofit, education, and corporate sectors. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business from Central State University, a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Master of Education and Doctor of Education and Organizational Leadership from Columbia University.
Blues performer, Bettie Mae Fikes, began singing gospel with her mother at age 4 then, as a founding member of the Freedom Singers, began traveling with Martin Luther King during the Freedom Rights struggle. Her travels have taken her to the stages of Carnegie Hall, Newport Jazz Festival, the Library of Congress, and numerous Blues Festivals throughout the country. She has performed with the likes of Joe Turner, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Albert King and Bob Dillon, just to name a few. Fikes is also a dynamic lecturer who has delivered moving speeches about diversity and civil rights at universities throughout the United States and Canada. She is described as having the ability to hold Blues audience members in the palm of her hand while using her talent to story tell with a powerful voice that could vibrates the walls!
