Who Will Carry the Word? is a French play written by Charlotte Delbo and translated into English by Cynthia Haft. A cast of 12 portray female French nationalists who were captured during the resistance to Nazi occupation of France during World War II.The play, focusing on the horrors of the Holocaust, is set during the first, most lethal months in the concentration camp at Auschwitz, where they shared barracks.

Based on the real life experiences of Charlotte Delbo, the autobiographical play focuses on the struggles and experiences of those imprisoned (and of those interred) at Nazi- run Concentration Camps. Death, suicide and survival are topics touched upon as the reality is that of Delbo’s 230 companions, only 49 survived to share the story of their experiences with the world.

Audiences will be shown a different side of the Holocaust through a focus on the internment of political resistors instead of on the interment of Jewish people, so that one may develop a deeper understanding of the Holocaust as a whole.

The performances will be October 26, 2018, at 7 p.m. and on October 27, 2018, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door. Each performance will be ASL (American Sign Language) interpreted for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

This will be the first show in the new Blackbox Theatre facility at Indian River High School. Built for the 2017 school year, the stage adds an additional performance space for theatre students. The performance will be presented in the round for an emotionally immersive experience.

Students in the cast have utilized dramaturgical practices to study the Holocaust, genocides, and the World War II era in order to develop their characters. Guest artists and language arts instructors have attended rehearsals to help teach pronunciation and musical arrangements based on the French and Nazi German national anthems. The cast plans to speak with Holocaust survivors and attend a research field trip to Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum during rehearsal weeks.
