SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – Following the death of Sen. John McCain, one of his long-time friends shares memories about the “Maverick” politician with NewsChannel 9.

Bill Smullen, chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell, says McCain changed the landscape of the U.S. Congress over the years and going forward, his absence will impact the outcome of a number of votes.

Smullen described McCain as a kind person who loved to serve his country.

“We always had those moments of just quiet conversation, just sharing things as a couple members of the Armed Forces,” Smullen said. “It’s a brotherhood.”
