Investigators have listed the cause of a fatal fire last weekend in Watertown as accidental. Fire Chief Dale Herman also says that there were no smoke detectors inside the second floor apartment of 551 Morrison St. where the fire originated and that other smoke detectors found in the building were not operational. Fire crews were called to the scene at around 5:30 am Saturday. Two people who were trapped in the home were removed from the scene by firefighters. Thirty year old Thomas Bartram, who lived in the apartment, died of injuries suffered in the blaze Sunday night at Samaritan Medical Center. Thirty two year old Chad Backus of LeRay St. remains in critical condition at a Syracuse hospital. Herman says the fire is believed to have started with a stove back burner being left on with the remains of a cooking pan on that burner. The fire was also in the direct patch of the escape route within the apartment. City Code enforcement was notified of structural damage to the building.
