Researchers with Paul Smiths College say infected ticks are on the rise throughout upstate New York.

A biology professor and some students from the college collected deer ticks in northern counties, including St. Lawrence, and they have found an increase in the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

On top of that, they have also encountered a number of ticks carrying an agent that causes a malaria-like illness in humans.

Officials say the findings are cause for awareness but not alarm, adding that preventing tick bites can be as easy as using repellent or even tucking pants into socks.
