ALDEN, N.Y. (WIVB) – Notorious inmate David Sweat has been transferred out of Wende Correctional Facility in Alden.
He is now being held in the Auburn Correctional Facility.
The move marks Sweat’s third prison transfer since November 2017.
Sweat and fellow inmate Richard Matt escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in Northern New York in June 2015.
After about three weeks on the run, Matt was shot and killed by federal law enforcement. Sweat was captured just days later after being shot by a state trooper.
Without explaining why Sweat has been transferred again, New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision officials say inmate status is reviewed regularly. Those reviews include checks on inmate behavior, allegiances with other inmates that could be disruptive, or over-familiarity with a facility.
There are about 5,000 inmate transfers from one prison to another every month, a DOCCS officials said.
After being captured, Sweat was sent to Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus, which is in the Finger Lakes region.
In November 2017, he was transferred to Attica Correctional Facility. Just six months later, he moved to Wende.
Sweat was taken to Auburn the week of Dec. 3.
