Former commander of an American Legion accused of embezzlement

The former commander of an American Legion post in Gouverneur has been charged with stealing money from that organization.

Village Police Saturday arrested Donald Matice, charging him with five counts of third degree grand larceny, one count of first degree falsifying business records, and one count of petit larceny.

The current commander of the post initiated the investigation when she reported “suspicious and possible misappropriated funds from two savings accounts, several checking accounts, an unauthorized credit card and funds belonging to the New York State Gaming Commission.”

That according to the press release from the police department.

Matice is accused of embezzling nearly $48,000 from the organization.

He was arraigned and released.

His case will now go to a grand jury.
