Watertown, NY February 1, 2015- The Fort Drum Regional Liaison Organization (FDRLO} is leading a community marketing effort to encourage the public to support Fort Drum in the wake of planned military cuts. The campaign starts this week by asking local residents to sign an online petition and attend the March 20th Army listening session and public rally at Jefferson Community College. This campaign, in cooperation with the New York State Realtors Association and local media, encourages public participation by noting that a significant force reduction at Fort Drum will have a devastating impact on the North County economy and quality of life.
To meet smaller operating budgets, the Army is projecting a national reduction in personnel strength from 490,000 to 420,000. The Army’s proposed plan cuts Fort Drum personnel by 16,000 positions. Army Officials have scheduled the listening session to hear public comment on this proposal. This Listening Session will be in the Sturtz Theater at Jefferson Community College and will be hosted by MG Stephen Townsend, Commander 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum. Preceding the session, a public rally is scheduled at 5pm at the JCC gymnasium.
FDRLO believes that Fort Drum is positioned to play a vital role in the Army’s future and is asking the public to tell the Army how North Country community partners add to military and strategic value.
FDRLO Executive Director Carl Mclaughlin said “we know that the level of community support at the rally and Listening Session will be factored into the Army’s decision making process: numbers count.”
