Jefferson Community College will hold its 51st annual spring commencement ceremony on Friday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the McVean Student Center Gymnasium. It is anticipated that approximately 500 candidates for May or August graduation will be awarded degrees or certificates. The College is privileged that Thomas H. Carman, president and chief executive officer of Samaritan Medical Center, Samarian Keep Home and Samaritan Summit Village, will give the keynote address at the commencement exercises.
Tickets are required for admission to the gymnasium and each student who is participating in the ceremony has received up to four tickets for guest seating in the bleachers. Tickets are not required for entrance to the Sturtz Theater where the ceremony will be simulcast. In addition, the commencement exercises will be video-streamed through the College’s website, www.sunyjefferson.edu, beginning at 6:45 p.m.
Guest entrance doors, adjacent to Parking Lot D, will open at 6:30 p.m. and handicapped and special needs guests may disembark at this entrance.
Commencement speaker Thomas Carman holds a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and a master’s degree in business administration from Syracuse University. A leader in the North Country community, Mr. Carman is involved in a variety of organizations within the healthcare arena and beyond and currently serves on the board of directors for the Watertown Rotary Club and the YMCA. He was a founding member and charter president of the Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization (FDRHPO) and is currently serving as FDRHPO chair for a second time. He is also secretary of the Fort Drum Regional Liaison Organization. Mr. Carman is a member and past chair of the Iroquois Healthcare Association Board of Directors and the Healthcare Association of New York State Board of Directors. Additionally, Mr. Carman has chaired the North Country Heart Walk and United Way of Northern New York Campaign. His dedication and contributions to the community earned Mr. Carman the prestigious Israel A. Shapiro Citizenship Award in 2013.
