A Jefferson County man is behind bars, accused of assaulting a six-week-old infant.

NYS Police say they responded to an apartment in Philadelphia, NY for a reported child not breathing and bleeding from the nose on Thursday.

When Troopers arrived, EMT personnel began CPR and transported the baby to Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, NY where medical personnel determined the victim was in cardiac arrest and suffered some type of trauma to the head.

Investigators interviewed the live-in boyfriend who was watching the baby while the mother was at work.

Troopers arrested Jeremiah Garnett and charged him with assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

The six-week old victim was transferred to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse where he is listed in critical condition with a severe brain injury.
The investigation is continuing.
