Watertown Mayoral candidate Joe Butler Jr. has returned a $1,000 donation to his campaign that came from a local developer who would directly benefit from the completion of Western Blvd.

The donation was made by Alexandria Bay developer Patrick Donegan who has been pushing for the city to complete the road, which provide an official city owned street through the Stateway Plaza, ultimately helping complete a pathway between Arsenal and Coffeen Streets.

Donegan owns property next to the plaza and has stated that the street would help him bring some new retailers to the area.

Earlier this month, the Watertown City Council, which Butler is a member of, decided to move ahead with eminent domain proceedings against the plaza.

Butler says the donation was returned when he learned that one had been made by the developer.

Butler is challenging current Mayor Jeff Graham.

As far as total contributions to the campaigns to this point, Graham has out-raised Butler $11,472 to $10,584.
