What is the history of Massena Central’s mascot?

The district’s superintendent, according to the Watertown Daily Times, is asking for community help to provide more background on the usage of “Red Raiders.”

It’s been the mascot for the school dating back to possibly the mid-1930s. However, officials at Massena are reviewing concerns brought forward by former students who say the the use “Red Raiders” is reference the old mascot, an Indian chief.

Back in 2001, the school phased out all Indian chief images, but kept using the term Red Raider.

A review is currently being conducted to ultimately determine the future use of Red Raiders.
