Scammers up in St. Lawrence County are trying to trick people into paying bogus energy bills.

According to police in the village of Potsdam, people pretending to represent National Grid are calling businesses to tell them they are months behind on their bill and that their power is about to be turned off.

Police say the scammer instructs potential victims to go buy a pre-paid “MoneyPak” card and then call back to read the numbers off the card.

If you receive one of these types of calls, you’re advised to hang up and then contact National Grid if you have questions.
