BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – New York State Police are warning residents of a phone scam where the caller claims to be with NYSEG.

Troopers recently have received several complaints from businesses where scammers threaten to cut service unless they’re immediately paid using a prepaid debit card. The scam also provides a call back number with a recorded greeting similar to that of NYS Electric and Gas Corp.

Troopers warn residents never to trust anyone who calls you and asks you to make a payment using a prepaid card.

If you have any questions about your bill, contact NYSEG directly.
