New York’s Attorney General is warning New Yorkers wanting to help victims of Hurricane Harvey to watch out for charity scammers.
Eric Schneiderman says he’s urging New Yorkers to support charitable organizations assisting Texas victims but says “there are always some who attempt to take advantage of a tragedy to line their own pockets.”
He recommends people take time to research the organization, know where your donation money will go, give to established charities, and check if a “text” contribution matches up with what’s reported on a charity website or by calling the organization.
