New York’s top education officials are preparing for a teacher shortage that they say is looming.

The teaching profession has struggled in the face of attacks on teachers unions and strict evaluations and certification efforts.

The Chancellor for SUNY and the State Education Commissioner announced a plan to revamp the teaching profession by expanding training opportunities, incentivizing teaching in urban and rural settings and recruiting future teachers while they’re still in high school.

There’s been a 40-percent enrollment drop in New York teacher enrollment preparation programs since 2009.
