It used to house criminals who broke the law, and now the old St. Lawrence County jail might soon be repurposed to house teens who have broken the law.
The Watertown Daily Times reports officials are set to tour the old facility in Canton to determine if it could be converted to a juvenile detention center. The potential move comes after state lawmakers passed the “Raise the Age” bill which means 16 and 17-year-olds convicted of certain crimes can’t be charged as adults.
And with most juvenile centers hours away, the county is attempting to find space to accomadate for the change in law. The tour of the vacant jail is reportedly set for Thursday.
