WATERLOO, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – State Police say a man suspected of shooting and killing two people in Waterloo is in custody.

They say the suspect– 48-year-old Emerson Tohafjian– was found at a campground in Phelps, where he was suffering from cuts on his arms and neck.

Investigators say the cuts were self inflicted and that the suspect had “lost a lot of blood.”

According to law enforcement, Tohafjian has a lengthy criminal record and has been arrested on charges including rape, cruelty to animals, criminal obstruction of breathing, menacing and assault, among other things.

He was arrested twice in June for domestic violence-related charges and posted bail twice.

State Police began investigating when they responded to North Virginia Street around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

In addition to the victims – a man and a woman – a second female was found shot at the scene.

They say her injuries are not life threatening.

None of the victims have been identified at this point.

This is the first homicide in Waterloo in two decades.
