Re-enacted Battle of Ogdensburg Returns to Downtown Streets

OGDENSBURG, NY 9 February 2015 – The armies of the United States and Great Britain clash in the 30th-annual re-enactment of the Battle of Ogdensburg through city streets and on Van Rensselaer Point (Lighthouse Point) the weekend of Feb. 21-22.

“We are commemorating the 202nd anniversary of the Feb. 22, 1813 Battle of Ogdensburg and the 30th anniversary of the re-enactment,” said Timothy Cryderman, President of Forsyth’s Rifles, the event organizers. “Beyond the anniversary activities, Ogdensburg is fortunate to have the original battlegrounds preserved much as they were when the Anglo-Canadian army attacked.”

The public activities Sat. Feb. 21 feature an afternoon downtown street battle, followed by a related talk on Gen. Thomas Benedict in the Ogdensburg Public Library.

De Kalb’s Brig. Gen. Thomas Benedict, commander of the northern frontier from Sackets Harbor to Salmon River, was one of St Lawrence County’s highest-ranking officers during the War of 1812.

Saturday concludes with an evening Winter Ball at the Am-Vets.

Sunday morning Feb. 22 there is a wreath ceremony at the grave of the heroic Sheriff Joseph York in the Ogdensburg Cemetery. Standing alone at a cannon during the attack, York was “too brave a man to shoot” according to a British officer.

The re-enacted finale of the battle follows in the afternoon on Van Rensselaer Point.

“Ogdensburg’s War of 1812 weekend kicks off the season for the dedicated re-enactors able to get to the city from Canada and the Northeast United States,” said Mr. Cryderman. “The friendship and camaraderie is something to see when these men and women get together not having seen one another for many months.”
