Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is calling on the U.S. Department of Agriculture to make milk an agricultural commodity under the Federal Crop Insurance program.
According to the Watertown Daily Times, Stefanik joined other members of Congress in submitting a letter to Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue requesting the change, which would put the dairy industry in a better position to recover from severe declines in milk prices.
The letter notes that milk prices have declined 30 percent in the last three years, despite high milk production with a value of over $2.5 billion.
Dairy farmers, including those in the north country, have said that the program has not provided any compensation for lost milk revenues since its inception. Members of Congress said they will work to improve the program in the upcoming Farm Bill reauthorization.
