The old St. Lawrence County jail might just be too old to be a new home for juvenile offenders.

Under the “Raise the Age” law, 16 and 17-year-olds will stop being placed in jails and prisons, meaning sheriff’s deputies throughout the north country could spend even more time transporting youth offenders to out-of-area detention facilities.

According to 7 News, the old jail in Canton is still an option, but it will take significant work to convert to a youth detention house. In attempting to find a solution, officials reportedly toured the Captial District Youth Center Tuesday.

While the plans aren’t yet clear, lawmakers and law enforcement might want to have a detention facility in St. Lawrence County.
