The prosecution in the manslaughter trial of Brenda Roth says what the suspect did was the equivalent of “giving kids a loaded gun to play Russian roulette.”
Roth is standing trial in Lewis County Court, facing second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide charges.
She is accused of giving 15-year-old Derrick Holton the prescription drugs that led to his overdose death and of not calling for help quickly enough to save him.
Roth’s defense attorney said in opening statements Monday that Roth didn’t know Holton or his friends were doing drugs at her Deer River home and that she wasn’t legally obligated to help.
The trial is slated to continue today in Lowville.
