WSYR – Trooper Joel Davis has been awarded the 2017 Lifesaving Award posthumously.

Davis was shot and killed while responding to a domestic call in the town of Theresa last July. The suspect shot and killed his wife, and shot and injured another person.

“He chose to get out of his car and walk towards danger and engaged in trying to save people’s lives. As we heard, there were three people being shot at and I think there’s no question that his actions saved their lives,” said Mike Green, the commissioner of the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services’ Commissioner.

The 36-year-old was a four-year veteran of the State Police, who previously served with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Davis was the first trooper killed in the line of duty in the North Country.
