The percentage of Americans who smoke has reached its lowest level since a Gallup poll began asking people in 1944.
Only 16% of Americans say they smoked a cigarette last week. The biggest decrease in smoking is among 18 to 29 year olds. It fell from 22% in 2015 to 15%. The age group with the highest percentage of smokers is 50-64 at 24%. When Gallup first began asking this question, more than 4 of 10 Americans said they smoked.
